Andrew Ury, M.D. Appointed to Certification Commission for Health Information Technology

09/20/2004 Seattle, WA — Practice Partner announced that Andrew G. Ury, M.D., founder and president of Practice Partner, has been appointed to serve as an inaugural member of the Certification Commission for Healthcare Information Technology. Dr. Ury joins eleven other health care industry leaders on the commission, which was formed in July by the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA), Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS), and The National Alliance for Health Information Technology (Alliance). The commission will lead the initiative to certify ambulatory electronic health record (EHR) applications and other healthcare information technology products. The group will develop criteria, policies, and procedures for evaluating EHR products with the goal of encouraging the adoption of electronic health records.

It should be noted that Dr. David Brailer, National Health Information Technology Coordinator, recently called for private sector EHR certification as part of a 10-year plan to modernize the health care system. “A private sector EHR certification is one of the market agents that does not exist today and is necessary for the health care industry to realize better value from our investment in health information technology, “ said Dr. Brailer.

Dr. Ury was selected to serve an initial one-year term on the commission, and the appointment is a recognition of his 20+ years experience as the designer of the widely used Practice Partner applications, as well as his involvement in EHR standards as a member of the HL7 EHR Standards Technical Committee. “As CEO of an EHR company, I am honored to participate in this initiative and look forward to working with the commission on EHR certification criteria.” said Dr. Ury. “Certification has the potential to accelerate the adoption of electronic health records. This is an important national priority because of the ability of EHR applications to improve healthcare quality and reduce costs.”
